Annie Morris
Annie Morris is the first artist to occupy the new pavilion of Château La Coste, designed by Oscar Niemeyer. For her debut in France, she presents sculptures, tapestries and paintings never before seen, as well as a six-meter-high bronze work specially designed for the gardens of Château La Coste. At the heart of the exhibition is a group of "Stacks" sculptures - the brightly colored towers of spheres that are emblematic of the artist's work.
The works on view in Niemeyer's vast concrete space are handmade with plaster and pigmented sand. Their stockier silhouettes, composed of a few larger spheres, have a quasi-figurative feel, reminiscent of the female body and the curves of pregnancy.
The exhibition also highlights the importance of drawing, painting and embroidery in Morris' work. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, like his sculptures, these creations are distinguished by recurring motifs, such as the grid, random lines and cryptograms.
As for the raw beauty of Morris' embroidery, it appears in tapestries made of fabrics, sewn together with large stitches.
