Discover Damien Hirst's ‘Natural History’ series in the Renzo Piano Pavilion

Since his early days as an artist, Damien Hirst has explored themes of belief such as religion, science, life and death.

One of the most emblematic series of Damien Hirst's work, Natural History is composed of various animals preserved in formaldehyde solutions. Doves, geese, sharks and cows are presented in the Renzo Piano Pavilion in a clinical style, alluding to the scientific experiments carried out on living beings. Here, Damien Hirst explicitly confronts us with death and asks us how we perceive it, according to our experiences and sensibilities. The artist explores the relationship between art and science, but also with religion, playing on the symbolism and titles of certain works: The Ascension, Heaven, The Impossible Truth. Mortality is an important theme in Damien Hirst's work, which he sees as impossible for a living being to imagine.
