Overleaf by Callum Innes

Château La Coste in Aix-en-Provence presents Overleaf, a new contemporary art exhibition by artist Callum Innes, installed in the luminous Pavillon Renzo Piano. This exhibition brings together recent works from the Resonance series as well as two monumental paintings from the Exposed Paintings series.

For more than thirty years, Callum Innes has been exploring the duality between creation and erasure. Through the patient work of applying and then dissolving pigments, he creates surfaces where color is both revealed and disappears. In Overleaf, this subtle tension between presence and absence reaches a new intensity. The works vibrate under the natural light of the pavilion, where each variation transforms their perception.

The canvases in the Resonance series are distinguished by their sensitivity to light and time. Color is carefully removed and then reapplied, revealing traces of the process and the beauty of impermanence. In dialogue with each other, the large Exposed Paintings deploy vast fields of color interrupted by dramatic erasures, confronting the viewer with the very materiality of painting.

Renzo Piano's refined architecture provides the ideal setting for this exhibition, where art, nature, and the light of Aix-en-Provence come together. Overleaf invites contemplation and slowness, reflecting the time needed to create these profound and meditative works.
