Julian Schnabel
For the last five decades, Julian Schnabel has explored ways of painting. From his initial wax paintings and plate-paintings to his most recent works, he has contributed to shaping the ever-open vocabulary of mark-making.
Always looking for new forms of art, he invites us to engage with the intensity of looking - at art and at the entire world. This exhibition will feature a rare selection of his most-loved important works, chosen in dialogue with his friend and fellow-traveller Donatien Grau. Visitors will be presented with works across the artist's entire career, and given a unique opportunity to recognize his constant inventiveness.
Concurrently with this tight survey of Schnabel's oeuvre, a series of new paintings representing Mediterranean umbrella pines was selected especially by the artist to be shown at Château La Coste and echo its Provence setting. It will be presented at the Bastide until the end of June, extending the exhibition across the site and underscoring the artist's continued commitment to experimentation.
