Sophie Calle
« Chasse Gardée »

This summer, Château La Coste welcomes artist Sophie Calle for a new exhibition entitled Chasse Gardée, on view at the Richard Rogers Gallery from June 15 to August 31, 2025.

For the first time presented in its entirety in French, the series À l’Affût (2017–2022) combines photography and text in a striking parallel between the worlds of hunting and romantic pursuit. The project originated during an exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, where the artist discovered that Le Chasseur Français magazine, known for its hunting content, was also famous for its personal ads.

Sophie Calle delved into the archives of this magazine, as well as those of Le Nouvel Observateur, Meetic, and Tinder, tracing the evolution of desire and romantic expectations over the decades. She pairs these texts with photographs of watchtowers and images captured by automatic cameras used to monitor wildlife in forests.

Each piece becomes a play of gazes, a silent question: hunter or prey?

This new chapter in the ongoing dialogue between Sophie Calle and Château La Coste adds to an already rich history. In 2018, the artist inaugurated Dead End, a permanent work on the Art & Architecture Walk. The bond between the artist and the estate continues today through this intimate and immersive exhibition.
