Susan Elias: First Major Solo Exhibition in France at Château La Coste

This autumn, Château La Coste is proud to host the first major solo exhibition in France of Berlin-based contemporary artist Susan Elias, presented in the iconic Richard Rogers-designed Floating Gallery.

Celebrated for her refined visual language, Elias’s work is described by art writer Karen Yager as:

“Elias’s hieroglyphs and lean essentials trace an elegant language and play off a fine-boned and sophisticated sensibility. A screen memory of history, Elias’ Roman plane trees silhouetted, their vibration and sway, and look toward the elegance of dance. Her rich lines and pure, shimmering colours tell an abstract story filled with compound emotions and formal codes — joyous, radiant, redolent, and simply beautiful.”

This exhibition marks a significant return to France for Susan Elias, who reflects:

“This is my first exhibition in France in many years. In 1973, I lived in Paris at the Cité des Arts, taught at the American Center, and spent time with my sister Ruth and her husband, Richard Rogers, who was then working with Renzo Piano on the Centre Pompidou. France has always felt like home to me.

I also once lived in Aix-en-Provence, at the Château Noir, with a view of Mont Sainte-Victoire, where Cézanne painted. It brings me great joy to now exhibit my work in Rogers’ magnificent gallery building at Château La Coste.”
